BURKINA FASO
Mennonite Central Committee West Africa works with 400 artisans in and around Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Sissao Hamidou, a local artisan, acts as liaison between MCC and artisans working at the Center National D’Artisanat and Le Village Artisanal de Ouagadougou.
We purchase musical instruments, lost wax figures, mudcloth scarves, masks, cotton wall hangings and pillows, grass baskets and leather chess sets from MCC West Africa.
Profile Of Burkina Faso
Landlocked in the geographical sense, Burkina Faso is by no means constrained in creativity. More than 60 ethnic groups contribute to the country's vibrant cultural and social climate. Burkinab's celebrate artistic expression through annual festivals for art and film.
The majority of Burkinab's are subsistence farmers, but in the small, arid country less than 10 percent of the land can be farmed without irrigation. The country's main industries include agriculture, textiles, and mining, but Burkina Faso is best known for its music, dance, and theater.
