Dhaka handicrafts

BANGLADESH

Dhaka Handicrafts was established by Enfants du Monde (EDM), a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization headquartered in Geneva. EDM has worked to improve the lives of children and rural families in Bangladesh since 1974 through a variety of social programs. Artisans working in family workshops make a variety of traditional wicker handicrafts from bamboo, cane, grass, and wood as well as clay pots. Approximately 14,000 members in 64 groups benefit from handicraft production, and a compulsory savings plan that earns interest. The group has established a fund for emergency medical services for members. Dividends the organization receives from its ATO buyers are used to provide sanitary toilets, tube-wells, houses and saplings to group members.

Profile Of Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a small nation on the Bay of Bengal that is surrounded by India. While the country may be poor economically — Bangladeshis earn an average income of $260 a year — it is rich in culture. Bangladesh is 83 percent Muslim and is one of the world's most densely populated countries with approximately 2,160 people per square mile.

Roughly 75 percent of the labor force works in agriculture or related jobs. Skills such as handicraft production - rugs, purses, pottery, jewelry and the like - provide much-needed supplemental income.
