Archana Handicrafts
INDIA
Archana Handicrafts is the largest artisan group that we buy from. Archana means "a thing of truth and beauty" in the Sanskrit language. It is a private business committed to helping Indian artisans by encouraging, developing and selling their traditional handicrafts. Rakesh Kaushal started the program more than 25 years ago as a practical expression of his Christian faith. Artisan groups range from single members to entire families to entire villages making brass and shesham wood items. Archana is committed to the welfare of the artisans and assists many craftspeople with banking, design, training and management. Archana is headquartered in New Delhi, but artisan groups are located throughout India.
A World Away purchases cotton textiles, shesham wood, mango wood and box wood items, soapstone items, pewter, bronze, brass and mother-of-pearl items, candle holders, lanterns, vases, jewelry, papier mache Christmas ornaments and leather animals from Archana.
Profile Of India
With a population of one billion, India is certainly a society of complex structures, diverse groups, and strong religious beliefs. Although Buddhism was founded in India, more than 80 percent of Indians are Hindu; roughly ten percent are Muslim.
India won independence from Britain in 1947 after the nonviolent resistance led by Mohandas Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. India's landscape includes the Himalaya Mountains — the highest on earth — and the Ganges Plain. Industries include textiles and steel, though rice farming and handicraft production are important trades as well.
