HONDURAS
Established in 1999, this candlemaking group is a project of the nonprofit women's organization Actions for Popular Development (ADP). The work of ADP includes a shelter for abused women and their children, a home for pregnant women and a microlending program. La Luciernaga's workshop employs four women, two are former residents of the women's shelter.
We purchase candles from La Luciernaga.
Profile Of Honduras
Honduras is approximately 80 percent mountainous, with swamps and forests completing the landscape. The country has been scarred by natural and man-made wounds; Hurricane Mitch pummeled the land in 1998, and the U.S. used the region for covert operations training in the 1980's.
Honduras' population is 90 percent mestizo, seven percent indigenous, and two and a half percent Garifuna. The country boasts Mayan ruins, stunning coral reefs, and exceptional wood, leather, and ceramic work.
