Ruth & Naomi

GUATEMALA

This weaving cooperative is located in Chontola, near Chichicastenango. More than 15 widows weave bright lengths of cloth on backstrap looms. Young men, trained as tailors, sew this cloth into finished products such as vests, bags, wallets and briefcases. These craftspeople are determined to ensure the survival of their families, their village and their culture, which they represent with the brightly woven floral designs in their textiles. We purchase Christmas stockings, tree skirts, cushion covers, glasses cases, bags and purses from Ruth and Naomi.

Profile Of Guatemala

The stronghold of the Mayan Empire, Guatemala is a land shaped by ancient civilizations, earthquakes, volcanoes and at times violence. In 1954, the democratic government was overthrown, leaving the country unstable and resulting in the disappearance of tens of thousands of people in the last 50 years.

Industries include bananas, coffee, textiles, and sugar, although the elite population owns the best farmland. Guatemalans speak at least one of 20 dialects and are known for their vibrant, colorful clothing.
