ACOGIPRI de R.L.
EL SALVADOR
The formal name for this group is Cooperative Association of the Integral Pro-Rehabilitation Independent Group. A group of young people with physical disabilities formed ACOGIPRI in order to alleviate the economic difficulties of people with low incomes and physical disabilities who cannot otherwise obtain stable work. The workshop offers artistic training and employment in making a variety of versatile ceramics for the table and kitchen. The workers have had little access to formal education but have developed excellent skills creating pottery. Their work receives high regard in El Salvador, especially for the unusual blue glaze technique they have developed through many years of hard work.
A World Away purchases ceramic bowls and bathroom accessories, mugs and tableware from ACOGIPRI.
Profile Of El Salvador
El Salvador — the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America — is situated on the Pacific Coast and is largely a Roman Catholic society. Two volcanic ranges line the landscape, and major industries include coffee, sugar and textiles.
Social inequalities and unrest in the 1970's and a vicious civil war in the 1980's compelled many El Salvadoran families to flee to the U.S. and Canada. Today El Salvador is a recovering economy.
